Sitting Meditation

Non-Self Is Not a Concept but an Experience

In meditation, non-self is not an idea to be understood or believed, but something that can be directly experienced. As observation deepens and body–mind processes are seen clearly, the sense of a solid “self” weakens and reveals itself as a series of changing events. Non-self is not concluded through thinking, but uncovered through direct experience.

1. Non-Self Is Not a Conceptual Conclusion

1.Not the result of reasoning
Non-self is not established by thinking “the self does not exist,” but by observing that no fixed entity can be found.

2.Not a belief or viewpoint
Holding non-self as an idea remains within the conceptual level and does not touch direct experience.

3.Not a denial of existence
Non-self does not mean nothing exists, but that there is no independent, permanent, controllable self.

2. How Non-Self Is Experienced

1.Seeing change in the body
The body is not a fixed whole, but a flow of sensations such as pressure, temperature, movement, and contact.

2.Seeing arising and passing in feeling
Pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral feelings arise, change, and disappear without a lasting owner.

3.Seeing the impersonal nature of thought
Thoughts arise on their own, not fully created or controlled by a self.

4.Seeing no center in awareness
Awareness itself has no fixed center; it is simply open knowing of what is present.

3. Why Non-Self Must Be Experienced

1.Concepts cannot replace experience
No explanation can substitute for direct observation.

2.Experience is irreplaceable
Only through practice can one see how the sense of self forms and dissolves.

3.Avoiding conceptual attachment
Remaining at the level of ideas creates new forms of clinging.

4. Common Pathways to Experiencing Non-Self

1.Observing bodily change continuously
Seeing the body as a changing process weakens the sense of solidity.

2.Observing the automatic nature of thought
Noticing thoughts arise and pass without ownership.

3.Maintaining continuity of awareness
Continuous awareness reveals the instability of the sense of self.

4.Reducing interference and control
Less intervention allows natural processes to be seen more clearly.

5. Transformations After Experiencing Non-Self

1.Reduced attachment
Less identification leads to less grasping.

2.Greater openness to change
Experience is seen as process rather than possession.

3.Softer emotional reactivity
Emotions are no longer intensified by self-centered identification.

4.Clearer and more stable awareness
Observation becomes more direct and less distorted.

6. Common Misunderstandings

1.Treating non-self as an idea
Conceptual understanding alone leads to attachment.

2.Forcing the absence of self
Suppressing the sense of self creates conflict.

3.Treating non-self as a goal
Chasing a state of “no-self” becomes another attachment.

4.Neglecting direct experience
Abstract thinking replaces real observation.

Conclusion

Non-self is not a theory to accept, but an experience that reveals itself through sustained observation. When body–mind processes are seen clearly, the sense of a fixed self dissolves into changing phenomena. True understanding comes not from thinking, but from direct, clear experience.
