Observing the Mechanism of “Self” Formation

In meditation, the “self” is not a fixed entity but a constructed pattern arising under certain conditions. It depends on sensations, memory, language, evaluation, and habitual reactions, and appears solid only when awareness is absent. Observing the mechanism of “self” formation is not about denying experience, but about seeing clearly how it is generated, maintained, and dissolved. When awareness becomes clear and continuous, the formation of the “self” is no longer hidden, but directly observable.

1. Basic Structure of the “Self”

1.Sensations are claimed as “mine”
Physical and emotional experiences become the basis of self when appropriated.

2.Thought constructs a narrative center
Language organizes experience into “I am experiencing” or “I am thinking.”

3.Memory creates continuity
Past experiences are linked, giving the illusion of a lasting identity.

4.Evaluation reinforces identity
Judgment of good and bad stabilizes the sense of self.

2. Process of “Self” Formation

1.Stimulus triggers sensation
External or internal events create bodily or emotional responses.

2.Attention labels the experience
Awareness meets sensation and assigns conceptual meaning.

3.Ownership arises
From “there is feeling” to “I am feeling,” establishing a subject.

4.Narrative expands
Thought elaborates, sustaining the structure of self.

3. Mechanisms Maintaining the “Self”

1.Continuous internal dialogue
Self-narration keeps identity active.

2.Habitual reaction patterns
Repeated responses reinforce consistency.

3.Emotional attachment
Strong emotions intensify the sense of self.

4.Selective attention
Information aligning with identity is prioritized.

4. Conditions for Dissolution

1.Direct awareness of experience
Observation without ownership interrupts formation.

2.Reduction of conceptual overlay
Less labeling allows raw experience to remain.

3.Emotions are allowed to move
Without suppression or identification, attachment weakens.

4.Continuity of awareness
Sustained observation exposes the process.

5. Practical Observation Methods

1.Distinguish sensation from ownership
See the difference between “feeling exists” and “this is my feeling.”

2.Observe how thoughts reference a subject
Notice repetition of “I” in internal language.

3.Trace the shift from stimulus to identity
Watch how self forms at the moment of reaction.

4.Rest in pre-conceptual experience
Allow experience before labeling.

6. Common Misunderstandings

1.Attempting to eliminate the self
Suppression creates new conflict.

2.Treating non-self as theory
Conceptual understanding does not transform experience.

3.Denying lived experience
Experience is real; its ownership is constructed.

4.Seeking quick conclusions
Premature judgment blocks direct observation.

7. Transformations Through Observation

1.The sense of self loosens
It is seen as a process, not a fixed center.

2.Reactivity decreases
Space appears before response.

3.Experience becomes more direct
Less narrative interference increases clarity.

4.Attachment diminishes
Without a solid self, grasping weakens.

Conclusion

The “self” is not an inherent entity but a dynamic construction of sensation, cognition, and reaction. Through sustained and clear observation, its formation, maintenance, and dissolution become visible. As awareness ceases to attach automatically, the solidity of the self fades, revealing a more open and direct mode of being.
