The Buddha Manifesting as Śakra to Transform the Brahmins
In the past, when the Buddha was teaching the Dharma at the Bamboo Grove of Kalandaka in Rājagṛha, there was a minister in the city named Liccha, who lacked right understanding and did not believe in cause and effect. He incited Crown Prince Ajātaśatru to rebel and kill his father. After ascending the throne, the king, filled with joy, ordered the people to prepare abundant delicacies and invited hundreds of Brahmins to receive offerings. He further decreed that from that time onward, no one was permitted to go to where the Buddha resided to hear the teachings.
After hearing this, the Brahmins no longer dared to go to the monastery to listen to the Buddha. One day, they gathered in private, and someone said, “In our Brahmanical scriptures it is recorded that the ascetic Gautama is the great lord of the gods. If we single-mindedly recite his name, perhaps he will come to accept our offerings.” Thus, the Brahmins devoutly chanted “Namo Gautama Śramaṇa.”
Out of compassion for sentient beings, the Buddha saw that the conditions for their liberation had matured. He therefore manifested as Śakra, the king of the gods, and descended from the heavens to their gathering. The assembly, having their wish fulfilled, rejoiced greatly and resolved to serve him for life. The Buddha then revealed his true form and expounded the Four Noble Truths. Upon hearing the teaching, each of them opened their minds to understanding and attained the fruit of Stream-entry.
Filled with gratitude, the Brahmins prepared fine food and made offerings to the Buddha and the Saṅgha. The bhikṣus, knowing this, respectfully asked the Buddha, “What merit did the World-Honored One cultivate in the past to transform these Brahmins and receive such abundant offerings today?” The Buddha compassionately explained, “Countless kalpas ago, in the country of Vārāṇasī, there appeared a Buddha named Miaoyin. One day, Miaoyin Buddha led the bhikṣus to the kingdom ruled by King Baodian. Upon hearing of the Buddha’s arrival, the king immediately led his ministers to welcome him outside the city and requested that the Buddha accept offerings of lodging, clothing, bedding, and medicine for three months.
After the three months of offerings were completed, the Tathāgata Miaoyin manifested seven-jeweled lotus flowers from his navel. Upon each lotus sat a transformed Buddha in meditation, emitting great light that reached the heavens above and the hells below. Seeing this miraculous display, King Baodian generated the supreme bodhi mind. Miaoyin Buddha then gave him a prediction: ‘In the future, you will become a Buddha named Śākyamuni, benefiting innumerable beings.’”
The Buddha told the bhikṣus, “At that time, King Baodian was my former self, and the ministers who made offerings together with me are these Brahmins today. Because of the supreme merit of making offerings to Miaoyin Buddha, we have, throughout countless lifetimes, not fallen into the three evil paths, but have enjoyed various blessings among gods and humans, until in this life attaining Buddhahood and receiving offerings from both humans and devas.” Upon hearing the Buddha’s words, the bhikṣus strengthened their faith in practice and joyfully upheld the teachings.
