勇者富楼那
有一次，佛陀住在憍萨罗国首都舍卫城的祇树给孤独园。
在一个傍晚时分，尊者富楼那来向佛陀请法：
「世尊！我想到一个僻静处独自专精修学，请教导我法要，好让我修得解脱。」
佛陀告诉他说：
「富楼那！当六根接触到令人喜欢的境界时，如果因此而生起欢喜赞叹、贪爱染着，那么，苦就会随之而生了。所以我说，有喜悦的生起，就有苦的生起。
富楼那！六根在遇到令人喜欢的境界时，如果不生起欢喜赞叹、贪爱染着，那么，苦就不会随之而生起。所以我说，喜的灭止，就是苦的灭止。
富楼那！以上是我给你的简短教说，你想要到哪里去专修呢？」
「世尊！我想到西部的输卢那地方去。」
「但是，西部的输卢那人性格普遍凶悍粗暴，富楼那！如果到了那儿，常遭到他们的辱骂，那怎么办？」
「世尊！输卢那人如果来我面前辱骂我，我会这样想：输卢那人算是很不错的了，他们没打我。」
「如果他们打你了，那怎么办呢？」
「世尊！不论他们用拳头打我，或是用石块、棍棒打我，我会这样想：输卢那人算是很不错的了，他们没拿刀杀我。」
「如果他们要杀你了，那怎么办呢？」
「世尊！如果他们要杀我了，我会这样想：有些厌恶自己身体的佛弟子，还得用种种方法自杀呢，他们要杀我这终将朽败的身体，正好算是帮了我一个大忙。」
「善哉！善哉！富楼那！有你这样的忍辱功夫，应当能前往西部的输卢那地方了。」
尊者富楼那有了佛陀的肯认，欢喜地拜别了佛陀，隔天就动身出发了。
沿途一路乞食游化，尊者富楼那来到了西部的输卢那地方住下，除了自己专精修学外，还教化了许多当地人归信佛法。到了隔年雨季来临前，就接引了五百位在家佛弟子，并在当地建立了一个可以容纳五百人修行的地方。
雨季安居的三个月过去了，尊者富楼那修得了三明，就在当地入无余涅槃了。

The Courageous Venerable Pūrṇa
Once, the Buddha was staying at the Jetavana Monastery in Sāvatthī, the capital of the Kingdom of Kosala.
One evening, the Venerable Pūrṇa came to seek guidance from the Buddha and said:
“Blessed One, I wish to go to a secluded place to practice diligently and seek liberation. Please teach me the essential Dharma so I may achieve this goal.”
The Buddha replied:
“Pūrṇa, when the six sense faculties come into contact with pleasing objects, if joy, praise, attachment, and craving arise as a result, suffering will inevitably follow. Therefore, I say that the arising of joy leads to the arising of suffering.
Pūrṇa, if the six sense faculties encounter pleasing objects but do not give rise to joy, praise, attachment, or craving, then suffering will not arise. Thus, I say that the cessation of joy is the cessation of suffering.
Pūrṇa, this is my brief teaching for you. Where do you intend to go for your practice?”
“Blessed One, I wish to go to the western region of Sronāparanta.”
“But, Pūrṇa, the people in the western region of Sronāparanta are generally fierce and rude. If you are insulted by them, what will you do?”
“Blessed One, if the people of Sronāparanta insult me, I will think: ‘The people of Sronāparanta are actually quite kind; they have not physically harmed me.’”
“What if they strike you?”
“Blessed One, whether they strike me with fists, stones, or sticks, I will think: ‘The people of Sronāparanta are actually quite kind; they have not killed me with a knife.’”
“What if they try to kill you?”
“Blessed One, if they try to kill me, I will think: ‘Some disciples of the Buddha, disillusioned with their bodies, must resort to various methods to take their own lives. If the people of Sronāparanta kill this decaying body of mine, they would actually be doing me a great favor.’”
“Well done, well done, Pūrṇa! With such patience and tolerance, you are well-prepared to go to the western region of Sronāparanta.”
Receiving the Buddha’s approval, Venerable Pūrṇa joyfully bade farewell to the Buddha and set off the next day. Along the way, he traveled while begging for alms and teaching. Upon reaching the western region of Sronāparanta, he settled there. In addition to diligently practicing himself, he taught the Dharma to many locals, guiding them to take refuge in the Buddha’s teachings.
Before the onset of the next rainy season, Venerable Pūrṇa had already inspired 500 lay disciples to embrace the Dharma and established a monastery in the area capable of accommodating 500 practitioners.
After three months of the rains retreat, Venerable Pūrṇa attained the Threefold Knowledge and entered parinirvāṇa in that very place, achieving final liberation.
