Transcending the Identity of the Observer
In meditation, many adopt the stance of “I am observing,” mistaking this for awareness itself. Yet the observer is still a subtle identity structure. Seeing through it is essential for deeper realization.
1. Initial Stage: Establishing the Observer
Forming an observing position helps disengage from objects.
It serves a functional purpose early on.
Yet it remains a provisional construct.
2. Turning Point: The Observer Is Also Known
When attention turns back, the observer is seen.
Whatever can be known is not the final subject.
This marks a critical shift.
3. Key Release: Letting Go of Position
No need to hold a vantage point.
No need to remind oneself to observe.
Awareness unfolds naturally.
4. Characteristic: Centerless Experience
Experience arises without a central reference.
Inner and outer boundaries soften.
Knowing and known are not two.
5. Function of Non-Function: Dropping the Meditator Role
The sense of “doing practice” fades.
Clarity increases as effort subsides.
This indicates authenticity.
6. Verification: Equal Awareness of All Conditions
Pleasant and unpleasant states are equally known.
No adjustment of stance is required.
Awareness remains impartial.
7. Stability: Beyond Naming
Naming the state fixes it conceptually.
True realization cannot be defined.
It appears only in immediacy.
8. Return: Natural Presence
Nothing to enter or maintain.
When effort ceases, awareness is evident.
This is transcending the observer identity.
Summary
The observer identity is a necessary phase, not the destination. Recognizing and releasing it allows awareness to dissolve duality and reveal non-separation.
