Classical Applications of Counting and Following the Breath

Counting and following the breath are foundational methods for calming the mind and establishing concentration. Though both use breathing as the object, their functions differ in emphasis and depth.

1. Counting as Entry

Counting gives the mind a clear task.
Scattered attention gradually gathers.
It suits beginners and restless states.

2. Continuity as Key

Skipping or repeating numbers signals distraction.
Notice and restart without judgment.
Counting itself trains awareness.

3. Simplicity as Principle

Count only inhalations or exhalations.
Simplicity stabilizes focus.
Complexity breeds distraction.

4. Transition to Following

When stability arises, release counting.
Simply accompany the breath.
Control gives way to presence.

5. Breath as Whole Experience

Attend to the full breathing process.
Not limited to a single point.
Following opens into holistic awareness.

6. Awareness as Core

Counting is not the goal.
Awareness is central.
Methods serve awareness.

7. Relaxed Stability as Measure

Tension indicates excess effort.
Looseness indicates loss of focus.
