The Parable of the Monkeys Entering the Sea
In the past, there was a forest by the seashore, where more than five hundred macaques lived within a radius of several dozen li. Once, masses of sea-foam gathered upon the water, rising to a height of several tens of zhang. They looked like a snow mountain as they drifted in with the tide and came to rest by the shore.
When the monkeys saw this, they said to one another, “Would it not be delightful if we were to go up to the summit of that mountain and play about there?” At that time, one monkey took the lead, climbed to the top, and leapt down, plunging straight into the water beneath. When the others saw that it had not emerged for a long time, they found this strange. They assumed that the interior of this mountain of foam must be a wonderful place for amusement, and that it was enjoying itself so greatly that it did not wish to come out. Therefore, all the monkeys competed with one another to jump into the foam, and in the end they all drowned.
The Buddha used this as a simile: “The seawater is the sea of birth-and-death (saṃsāra); the mountain of foam is the body formed by the aggregation of the Five Skandhas; the monkeys are analogous to the human conscious spirit. Not knowing that the Five Skandhas are empty, people, in ignorance and delusion, become attached to sensual desire and craving, and thus sink into the sea of birth-and-death, with no prospect of escape.”
Therefore, the Vimalakīrti Sūtra says: “This body is like a mass of foam, forced to endure repeated washing and bathing.”
