以微小善信行施得天福
昔日，盛夏酷暑之时，舍利弗尊者行至一庵罗园中。当时，园内有一位临时雇工正在汲取井水，准备用来灌溉树木。这个雇工对于佛法并没有大信心，此时见到舍利弗尊者时，起了一个微小的善信，呼唤尊者：「大德！大热天，请脱下衣服，到树下坐，我用水为您灌沐，这样也可以同时浇灌树木，一举两得。」舍利弗尊者接受雇工的善意，脱下衣服，让雇工用水灌沐，因此得以消暑，身得清凉，然后再继续行路。
这个雇工当晚命终，旋即投生至忉利天，具有大威德力，福德仅次于忉利天天主释提桓因，便自思惟：「我是以何因缘而得以投生天上？」于是观察自身的宿命，知道过去生在人道时，对佛法信心微薄，受雇替人浇灌园林以维持生计，由于当时曾用水为舍利弗尊者灌沐，以缓解酷热，因此福德因缘而得以生天。
天人接着思惟：「我若对佛法信心纯厚，知因识果，知道供养僧宝必能获福，一定会特别准备沐浴用具以作供养。我自知过去生仅做了微薄的供养，是因为遇到尊者这个大福田，所以获得的福报甚多。」随即前往舍利弗尊者所在处，散花供养。
舍利弗尊者知道此天人已对佛法具有净信之心，便为其说法，天人闻法，即证得须陀洹果。

Blessings Gained from a Small Act of Faithful Giving
Once, during the intense heat of midsummer, the Venerable Śāriputra came to a mango grove. At that time, there was a hired worker drawing water from a well to irrigate the trees. This worker did not have strong faith in the Buddha-Dharma. However, upon seeing the Venerable Śāriputra, he gave rise to a small thought of faith and called out, “Venerable sir! It is very hot. Please remove your robe and sit under the tree. I will pour water over you to cool you, and at the same time irrigate the trees. This will accomplish both purposes.” The Venerable Śāriputra accepted the worker’s goodwill, removed his robe, and allowed the worker to pour water over him. Thus, he was relieved from the heat, his body became cool, and he continued on his journey.
That very night, the worker passed away and was immediately reborn in the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven. He possessed great power and merit, second only to Śakra, the lord of that heaven. He reflected, “By what cause and condition have I been reborn in the heavens?” Observing his past life, he understood that when he was a human, his faith in the Buddha-Dharma was slight, and he worked as a hired laborer irrigating gardens to sustain himself. Because he had once poured water over the Venerable Śāriputra to relieve the heat, this karmic merit enabled him to be reborn in the heavens.
The deva further reflected, “If I had possessed deep and pure faith in the Buddha-Dharma, understood cause and effect, and known that making offerings to the Saṅgha certainly brings merit, I would have specially prepared bathing implements as an offering. I now know that in my past life I only made a small offering, but because I encountered such a great field of merit as the Venerable, the resulting blessings are immense.” He then went to the place where the Venerable Śāriputra was and scattered flowers as an offering.
Knowing that this deva had developed pure faith in the Buddha-Dharma, the Venerable Śāriputra taught him the Dharma. Upon hearing the teaching, the deva immediately attained the fruit of Stream-entry.
