牟尼公主施灯功德
释迦牟尼佛住世时,舍卫国人民因感念佛的恩德,不论尊卑贵贱、男女老少,皆持香油灯具至祇洹精舍供养佛陀。由于供养者众多,所以油灯一直从精舍延伸到外面的树林;到了晚上,犹如众星遍布夜空,日日如是。阿难见此因缘殊胜万分,欢喜赞叹佛陀的德行高远,并且请示:“不知世尊过去因何因缘,感得今日众人供养无量灯烛?”
佛陀告诉阿难:久远劫前,南阎浮提有位国王名波塞奇,主宰世界八万四千诸小国土。他的夫人生下一位太子,全身散发着紫金光,不仅具足三十二相、八十种好,头顶还自然有珠宝装饰其中,光芒晃耀!于是,国王请命相师为太子占相取名,相师一看,觉得不可思议,高声唱道:“善哉!善哉!这位太子世间无人能比,将来如果治国,必是转轮圣王;若是出家修行,必能成佛。”相师询问国王:“太子出生时,有何异相?”国王描述当时的情形后,相师即为太子命名为“宝髻”。宝髻太子长大后,果真出家修行,成就佛道,度脱无量无边众生。
波塞奇国王虔心供养佛陀及僧众三个月,使其衣食无缺,安心办道。当中,有位圣友比丘发心在这段期间负责所有供灯所需,所以天天到城里向长者、居士化缘酥油、灯具。当时国王有位女儿,名叫牟尼,在城楼上见到比丘每天如此辛苦地往返城中募化,心生敬重,于是派人了解原委。公主知道比丘的发心后,决定帮助他,便时常派人送酥油、灯炷等供灯物品至精舍。
由于圣友比丘发广大虔敬之心,日日燃灯供养,其精进功德不可思议,佛陀即为其授记:“将来必成佛道,名为定光佛。”牟尼公主听到这个消息后,心想:“这些供灯物品都是我布施的,既然圣友比丘燃灯供养,就能得到佛的授记,为何我没有呢?”于是公主前往精舍,向佛陀说出自己的想法,佛陀也为牟尼公主授记:“你于来世二阿僧祇九十一劫,将会成就佛道,名为释迦牟尼。”牟尼公主闻佛授记,发大欢喜心,当下女转男身,并求佛出家,获佛陀慈悲应允。出家后,精进勇猛,勤修不懈。
释迦牟尼佛告诉阿难及在场大众:“当时的圣友比丘,即是上一劫出世,度化无量众生的定光佛,而牟尼公主就是我的前身。因过去施灯供养,无数劫中于天上人间受福无量,并且具足庄严相好;今日能够成就佛道,也是由于过去供灯所得的殊胜果报啊!”在场大众听闻开示后,有证初果、二果、三果、四果……,亦有发无上道心;阿难尊者及诸大比丘皆心生欢喜,信受奉行。

The Merit of Princess Muni’s Offering of Lamps
During the time when Śākyamuni Buddha was in the world, the people of Śrāvastī, out of gratitude for the Buddha’s virtue, regardless of status, gender, or age, all brought oil lamps to Jetavana Monastery to make offerings. Because there were so many offerings, the lamps extended from the monastery into the surrounding forest. At night, they appeared like countless stars filling the sky, and this continued day after day. Seeing this extraordinary condition, Ānanda rejoiced and praised the Buddha’s lofty virtue, and asked, “World-Honored One, by what past causes and conditions do beings today make offerings of countless lamps?”
The Buddha told Ānanda: In the distant past, there was a king in Jambudvīpa named Pasenadi, who ruled over eighty-four thousand small kingdoms. His queen gave birth to a prince whose entire body emitted a purple-golden radiance. He possessed the thirty-two marks and eighty excellent characteristics, and jewels naturally adorned his crown, shining brilliantly. The king summoned a physiognomist to examine and name the prince. Seeing him, the seer exclaimed, “Excellent! This prince has no equal in the world. If he rules, he will be a Wheel-Turning King; if he renounces, he will become a Buddha.” After hearing the king’s account of auspicious signs at birth, the seer named him “Ratnaśikhī.” When he grew up, he indeed renounced the world, attained Buddhahood, and liberated countless beings.
King Pasenadi devoutly supported the Buddha and the Saṅgha for three months, ensuring their needs were met so they could practice at ease. Among them, a bhikṣu named Sāntika resolved to take responsibility for all lamp offerings during this period, going daily into the city to collect ghee and lamp materials. At that time, the king’s daughter, Princess Muni, saw his efforts from a tower and felt deep respect. Learning of his vow, she decided to assist him and regularly sent ghee and lamp wicks to the monastery.
Because of the bhikṣu’s vast and sincere devotion in offering lamps daily, his merit was inconceivable. The Buddha gave him a prediction: “In the future, you will attain Buddhahood, named Dīpaṅkara.” Hearing this, Princess Muni thought, “These lamp offerings were provided by me. Since he receives a prediction, why not I?” She went to the Buddha and expressed her thought. The Buddha also gave her a prediction: “After two asaṃkhyeya and ninety-one kalpas, you will become a Buddha named Śākyamuni.” Upon hearing this, she rejoiced greatly, transformed from female into male, and requested ordination. The Buddha compassionately permitted it. After ordaining, she practiced diligently and without slackening.
Śākyamuni Buddha told Ānanda and the assembly: “That bhikṣu Sāntika is the Dīpaṅkara Buddha of a past age, and Princess Muni was my former self. Because of offering lamps in the past, throughout countless kalpas I received immeasurable blessings in heavens and among humans, and attained perfect physical marks. My present attainment of Buddhahood is also due to the supreme fruition of those lamp offerings.” Hearing this teaching, many attained the fruits of the path, while others generated the supreme aspiration. Ānanda and the great bhikṣus rejoiced, accepted, and practiced accordingly.
