Dharma Talk
Who Is Supreme in the World
Two Brahmins argued back and forth, drawing a crowd of curious onlookers.
“The Buddha, through three asaṃkhyeya kalpas cultivating merit and wisdom and a hundred kalpas perfecting his marks, possesses the foremost blessings and wisdom in the three realms, unmatched by any!” said the first Brahmin, a sincere believer in the Dharma.
“My teacher Pūraṇa is the foremost in the world,” the second Brahmin, a follower of an external path, strongly refuted.
“The Dharma taught by the Buddha is supreme and is the true guide for humans and devas,” continued the first Brahmin.
“The teachings of my teacher Pūraṇa are the true doctrine of the world,” argued the second Brahmin in a near shout.
Thus they debated endlessly, and the crowd grew larger, yet no one could determine who was right.
News reached the palace, and King Prasenajit summoned the two Brahmins to inquire into the matter.
“My teacher Pūraṇa possesses great supernatural powers, far surpassing that ascetic Gautama called the Buddha,” the second Brahmin reported first, proudly assuming a victorious stance.
“Does the Buddha you follow also possess such powers?” the king asked the first Brahmin.
“The Buddha not only possesses such powers, but none can equal him,” he replied confidently.
“Very well. Since each of you claims your teacher has great powers, in seven days you shall demonstrate this publicly,” declared the king.
On the appointed day, thousands gathered in the square, eager to know who was supreme. The two Brahmins arrived and awaited the king’s command.
“Now each of you burn incense, scatter flowers, and sprinkle water, and in your hearts invite your teacher to come and receive offerings.”
The second Brahmin made his vow and cast the flowers and water into the air. The crowd watched intently, but the petals merely drifted and fell to the ground. Disappointed, people murmured that Pūraṇa had deceived them.
The first Brahmin then did the same. Instantly, the flowers transformed into a canopy and flew toward the Buddha’s abode. Soon, the Buddha arrived. As he walked, the canopy followed; when he stopped, it halted. Seeing this great power, the people rejoiced, developed deep faith, and abandoned the external path to take refuge in the Buddha.
The first Brahmin, filled with vigor, bowed fully and made a great vow: “By this offering, may I in future lives become the eyes of the ignorant, enabling them to hear the Dharma and open wisdom; a refuge for the helpless; liberating the unliberated; leading the unsettled to the peace of nirvāṇa.” The Buddha smiled and emitted radiant light.
Ānanda requested, “The Buddha’s body, speech, and mind are pure and never act in vain. This smile must have a cause. Please explain.”
The Buddha said, “This Brahmin, with sincere devotion, made offerings and great vows. Through this merit and vow, after three great asaṃkhyeya kalpas, he will become a Buddha named ‘Acala,’ saving countless beings. Therefore I smile in approval.” Hearing this prediction, all rejoiced and practiced with greater diligence.
