Steamed Tofu with Fermented Black Bean and Chili Sauce

Summary:

This is a smooth, savory, and mildly spicy vegan steamed dish where the umami of fermented black beans blends perfectly with the delicate texture of tofu, creating a light yet flavorful meal.

Ingredients:

Soft tofu 300g (cut into blocks)

Fermented black beans 1 tablespoon (lightly mashed)

Red chili 50g (thinly sliced)

Light soy sauce 1 tablespoon

Aged vinegar 1 teaspoon (optional)

White pepper powder to taste (optional)

Vegetable oil 1 tablespoon

Toasted white sesame seeds 1 teaspoon (optional)

Water 1 tablespoon

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Tofu:
Cut the soft tofu into blocks and arrange them in a heatproof deep plate, ensuring they don’t overlap for even steaming.

2. Make the Sauce:
In a bowl, mix fermented black beans, light soy sauce, aged vinegar (optional), white pepper powder (optional), and 1 tablespoon of water. Stir well.

3. Heat the Sauce:
Heat vegetable oil in a pan, add the black bean sauce mixture, and stir for about 10 seconds before turning off the heat to release the aroma.

4. Steam the Tofu:
Pour the heated black bean sauce over the tofu evenly, garnish with red chili slices, and steam over high heat for 7-10 minutes.

5. Garnish and Serve:
Remove from the steamer, sprinkle with toasted white sesame seeds (optional), and serve hot. The dish is tender, fragrant, and deeply flavorful.
